On the Road Again

Bonjour à tous !

Pour celles et ceux qui ne me connaissent pas encore, je m’appelle Selim. Il y a quatre ans, alors que je voyageais en van en Nouvelle-Zélande, j’ai eu un grave accident qui m’a rendu paraplégique. Depuis, le chemin a été long et difficile mais porté par la même envie profonde de retrouver ma liberté et pouvoir reprendre la route malgré le handicap.

Après des mois, voir des années de réflexion, de recherches et de plans esquissés sur tous types de véhicules, j’ai finalement choisi l’option du camping-car, principalement pour l’espace qu’il offre. Malheureusement, les rares camping-cars accessibles sur le marché sont souvent hors de prix et ont un côté très "médicalisé". J’ai donc décidé d'acheter un camping-car existant avec du potentiel et de le faire aménager par un professionnel. Pour rendre cela possible, j’ai investi toutes mes économies et même emprunté de l’argent à ma famille car retrouver cette liberté de voyager compte beaucoup pour moi.

L'aménagement adapté à mon handicap été rendu possible grâce à Coachbuilt, une entreprise britannique qui a accepté le défi complexe de modifier un camping-car existant. Petit à petit, ils ont réussi à le transformer :

• la porte a été élargie
• une plateforme élévatrice a été installée
• un double plancher ajouté
• la douche agrandie
• des cloisons et portes retirées pour créer un vrai espace fauteuil

Il ne reste plus qu’une dernière étape pour être pleinement autonome et pouvoir voyager plus longtemps que sur de simples weekends, à savoir installer des toilettes avec un système spécial qui me permettrait de tout gérer seul une fois sur la route. J’ai trouvé une entreprise française spécialisée capable de le faire ainsi que d'autres modifications mais le coût est élevé et j’ai malheureusement atteint les limites de mon budget.

Entre temps je me suis mis un peu plus sérieusement au tennis fauteuil. Je commence à participer à des Opens qui s’étalent sur plusieurs jours et avoir un camping-car totalement accessible changerait tout. Cela me permettrait de réduire les frais d’hébergement pendant les tournois et de continuer à voyager tout en participant aux compétitions. 

C’est pour tout cela que je fais appel à vous. Votre soutien, que ce soit un don, même modeste, ou simplement le partage de mon histoire, m'aidera à franchir cette dernière étape vers une vie de voyages, de sport, et surtout d’indépendance retrouvée.

Hi Everyone !

For those who don't know me, my name is Selim. Four years ago, while I was travelling around New Zealand in a van, I had a serious accident that left me paraplegic. Since then, It's been a long and difficult journey of recovery driven by the same strong desire to travel again and get back on the road despite the diability.

After months and even years of thinking, researching, and sketching out plans for all kinds of vehicles, I finally chose a motorhome, mainly because of the space it offers. Unfortunately the very few accessible models on the market are often incredibly expensive and too "disability focused". So I decided to take another path and buy a regular camper with potential that I could adapt into the perfect home on wheels for me. To make it happen, I used all my savings and even borrowed a bit of money from my family, because being able to regain my independence on the road means so much to me.

The adaptations I needed were made possible thanks to Coachbuilt, a UK-based company that took on the complex challenge of modifying an existing camper. Step by step, they’ve helped transform it:

• the door has been widened
• a lift platform installed
• a double floor added
• the shower expanded
• walls and doors removed to create proper wheelchair space

There is now just one step left for me to be fully independent and able to travel for longer periods than weekends is to install a toilet with a special waste system that will allow me to manage everything on my own while on the road. I’ve found a specialised French company able to do the installation and few other modifications but the cost is high and I’ve unfortunately reached the end of my budget.

In the meantime, I’ve also gotten more seriously into wheelchair tennis. I’ve started taking part in Opens that run over several days, and having a fully accessible camper would change everything. It would help me reduce accommodation costs during tournaments and allow me to keep travelling while competing.

This is why I’m asking for a bit of help. Whether it’s a small donation or simply sharing my story, any support would mean a lot. It would help me take this final step toward travelling more freely again and continuing this journey with a bit more independence.
